Hugh’s routes made the Picos feel like a dawdle up the M1. What a trip!

I have done a few tours now of the usual “try a different hotel every night”. Then travel at lightning speed through umpteen amazing sights without understanding where or what they are. This has become tiresome and unenenjoyable. Hugh Anderson of Sierra Alma Touring offers something completely different to the normal bike tour.

My friends and I decided on using Hugh’s operation so as we could be centrally based in an AirBnB apartment in the middle of Salamanca which is a glorious city in it’s own right. Once settled we could then travel on the bike (unfettered with luggage) with Hugh leading us to places we would never have imagined. He knows this area of Spain like the back of his hand, taking us on some amazing roads into and around the mountains to the south of Salamanca. We also did a trip to the Duero river and dams along the Portuguese border and visited a private motorcycle museum at Hervás.

Our stops for coffee and lunch were ably assisted with Hugh’s translation skills to ensure that menu choices were not a complete lottery!

On the ferry home I was talking to someone who thought that the Picos area of Spain had some fantastic roads to try. We’ve all been on those roads and I’m afraid they don’t come anywhere near to those that Hugh took us on!
All of us came away from this trip knowing a lot more about this area of Spain than we would not have learned from being on any other tour. I would have no hesitation in recommending Hugh and Sierra Alma Touring to anyone looking to discover this new part of Spain.
